(BEIJING, May 22) -- In addition to elevators and regular staircases, there are 12 sets of zigzagging staircases in the Bird's Nest. Directed by clearly marked signs, spectators can use the staircases to reach the second and third floors.

Though these unique staircases add beauty to the Bird's Nest, their main purpose is to allow spectators to easily move around the facility. Each staircase is more than 60 meters long.

According to designers, the staircases were originally meant to be straight, but after carefully analyzing simulations of potential crowd movement, they decided that the zigzag design would be safer. The staircases also have other safety features such as security cameras, handrails and emergency exits.

Spectators will be able to enjoy beautiful views of the Bird's Nest, the Water Cube, National Indoor Stadium and the National Convention Center from different points along the staircases.
