Li Yanfeng wins first gold in women's discus

(Beijing, May 22) Li Yanfeng from China's Heilongjiang Province won the first gold of the "Good Luck Beijing" 2008 China Athletics Open this evening in the women's discus with a personal best mark of 63.79 meters.

With her attempts averaged at 62 meters, Li gave a consistent performance before throwing the discus at the distance of 63.79 meters in her third attempt to claim the title. Li's compatriot Song Aimin from Hebei Province edged her Australian rival Dani Samuels with her last attempt of 63.74 to grab the silver. Both Chinese throwers met the Olympic A Qualification standard.

The bronze went to Australian Dani Samuels with 62.65. China's Ma Xuejun failed to bring out her best, placing fourth with 61.92.
