(Beijing May 23) Zhang Peimeng and Wang Jing of China snatched the men's and women's 100m events tandem at the "Good Luck Beijing" 2008 China Athletics Open tonight. Japanese Tanno Asami clocked 52.51 seconds to win the women's 400m as Olympic champion Liu Xiang moved closer to the trophy of 110m hurdles after making the final of the event.
In the first final held on the second day, China's Huang Xiaoxiao clocked 54.50 seconds to grab the gold medal of the women's 400m hurdles.
The Olympic A Standard qualifier and double Asiad champion ended in first but was disqualified for committing a foul during the race. The event organizing committee announced later that it was a misjudgment after a review of the race video requested by Huang.
Japanese Kubakura Satomi took the silver with 55.94 seconds and China's Wang Xing clocked 56.35 seconds to gain the bronze.
In the men's 100m final, Zhang Peimeng produced a season-best of 10.23 seconds to win the title, his compatriot Hu Kai in the second spot with 0.01 behind. Three Chinese sprinters have so far reached the Olympic Qualification B standard. The bronze went to Aussie Patrick Johnson, who clocked 10.31.
The same distance on the women's side, Wang Jing of China also produced a season's best time of 11.42 to win the final. Jiang Lan and Chen Jue were second and third respectively.
In the women's 400m final, Japanese Tanno Asami, bronze medalist of the 2006 Doha Asiad, finished in 52.51 seconds to win the title.
"I ran well in the first half but not so well at the following curves," Tanno said. “My last 50m sprint was OK,” she added.
Wang Jinping from China's Heilongjiang Province took the silver in 53.15 and Chen Lin from Shandong Province sit in third in 53.19.
China's star hurdler and Athens Olympic champion Liu Xiang clocked 13.46 seconds to cruise into the men's 110m hurdles final. In tonight's semi, Liu jumped the gun in the first start and produced a reaction time of 0.165 in the second. It was his outstanding technique that ensured his top finish in the group.
The false start happened as Liu could hardly acclimatize himself to the firing pace by the local referee after a batch of competitions abroad, according to Sun Haiping, Liu's coach.
Ji Wei from the PLA clocked 13.53 in second while Shi Dongpeng of Hebei Province also made the last stage in 13.55.
In other events, Liu Qing from China's Shanxi Province timed 4:11.85 to win the women's 1500m final while Liu Haili of Liaoning gained the heptathlon title.
