(Beijing May 25) In the last day's competitions of the "Good Luck Beijing" 2008 China Athletics Open, the Sichuan team achieved an amazing come-from-behind victory in the men's 4x100m relay final while for China's star distance runner Sun Yingjie, her dream of competing in the Beijing Olympic Games has been shattered after finishing 12th in the women's 5000m event tonight.

In the men's 4x100m relay, the final had been expected to be a duel between Japan and China's national team. Today, China led the first 300 meters, but a failed baton change happened between the Chinese athletes as the third runner Hu Kai accidentally fell and the baton slipped from the hand of his teammate Liang Jiahong, the last runner. In the meantime, Japan and Guangdong lost no time in forging ahead in the last leg.

As from nowhere, Sichuan's last runner Yin Hualong, lagging behind his Japanese counterpart by two meters from the baton change, sped up and inched nearer before crossing the line in 39.45 seconds, merely 10 milliseconds ahead of his Japanese rival.

Facing camera, Yin Hualong pointed at the characters "Sichuan" on his vest and roared, "I'm from Sichuan!" It was indeed an inspiring win for Sichuan after this local province in southwest China was hit by an 8.0-magnitude earthquake on May 12, which took a heavy toll of over 60,000 lives.

Guangdong stood third in 39.55 in the event.

In another highly anticipated event of the women's 5000m, Xue Fei from China's Jiangsu Province clocked 15:42.95 to win the title, followed by her teammate Hao Xiaofan (15:43.44) and Bai Xue of Beijing (15:46.19).

Former 10,000m world championship bronze medalist Sun Yingjie's hopes of vying for an Olympic medal at Beijing 2008 ended as she finished in the 12th place with a time of 16:52.61.

The 29-year-old tested positive for the banned steroid androsterone in the 10000m at China's National Games in 2005 and returned after a two-year ban later last year fighting for one out of the three berths for the 2008 Olympics.

"My Olympic dream is dashed. Everyone was watching me: Sun Yingjie in the last place. Other people could never imagine such kind of feelings," Sun said after the race as tears ran down her face.

In the men's 800m, Li Xiangyu from China's Shanxi Province clocked 1:48.39 to pocket the gold. Xia Xiudong from Zhejiang notched the silver in 1:48.91 while the bronze went to Sudanese William Filip, who finished in 1:49.40.

The women's triple jump title went to China's Xie Limei, who cleared 14.39 meters in the final. The silver and bronze were taken by Li Qian with 13.93m and Sha Li with 13.73m respectively.

Lee Hup Wei of Malaysia dominated the men's high jump event with 2.27m. "When I go back I will start training for the Olympics in the next three months. But as for my goal in the Olympics I haven't thought about it," Lee was quoted as saying.

In other events, Zhang Li of China's PLA won the women's javelin gold with a personal-best throw of 62.09 meters, by which she has become the third Chinese clinching an Olympic berth. Qi Haifeng of Liaoning took the men's decathlon trophy with as many as 7585 points.

The 91,000-seat Bird's Nest, which will host the opening and closing ceremonies and the track and field events of the Beijing Olympic Games, won applause from both the athletes and sports officials.

The athletes of the world will be excited out of their minds to compete in this world-renowned stadium, according to Kevan Gosper, Chairman of the International Olympic Committee Press Commission.
